Reading Tracker Program

Here at Westmeade, we believe that readers are leaders. When children are engaged in reading, they have the opportunity to grow their vocabulary, knowledge of the world, and imagination. Therefore, we have designed an in-house reading incentive system based on the research supported recommendation that children read for 20 minutes per day for a total of 100 minutes throughout the school week.

Each Friday, students bring home a “Reading Tracker” form where they should record the number of minutes they spend reading per day and answer two reflection questions. This form should stay in the back of their Take Home Folder throughout the week. They should have the form signed by a grown up at the end of the week and return to school each Friday. Alternately, students can choose to record their minutes read and book reviews online in the Beanstack app. The goal is for students to record a minimum of 100 minutes of reading for the week. Students who turn in completed forms or log their minutes on Beanstack will be entered to win small prizes throughout the week. Students who log 400 minutes or more will be invited to a library reading party at the end of the first quarter. This minute goal will increase as the year goes on.

Frequently Asked Questions:

What can my child read to complete the form? The purpose of this program is to build up positive reading habits and a love of reading. They may read anything that interests and excites them. This might be a picture book, audio book, chapter book, graphic novel, magazine, news article, etc.

Does this have to be independent reading? No. Students can read with a friend, sibling, grown up, listen to reading, etc. As long as they are engaging with literature, the minutes count.

What if my child misses a week? If your child is absent on Friday, just turn in the form the following Monday. They may also make up the minutes the following week if needed to qualify for prizes by the end of the quarter.

Volunteer State Book Award

The Tennessee Association of School Librarians sponsors the Volunteer State Book Award. Nomination lists of approximately 20 books are published over the summer for age groups. Kindergarten-2nd grade books are found on the "Primary" list and 3rd-5th grade books are found on the "Intermediate" lists.

All students in the state of Tennessee are encouraged to read from these lists throughout the school year. In the spring, students who have read 3 or more nominated titles are invited to vote for the winner of the award. Our goal at Westmeade is for all of our students to be eligible to vote in the spring!

More information, including reading lists can be found here.

Book Clubs

Students in all grade levels have the opportunity to participate in lunch bunch book clubs throughout the school year. Check your child's weekly classroom newsletter for more details regarding sign up.
